Reverse engineering is a process to digitalize a part into CAD model.
In some industrial sectors it is common practice to deal with objects manufactured without the aid of a CAD model. This usually happens during the prototype development stage in many mass market products.
Generally speaking, the need to reconstruct the mathematical model of an object using reverse engineering techniques is required when dealing with products that were developed before the advent of CAD or with artistic objects.
Reverse engineering is also used to generate spare parts when the 2D drawing or 3D model are not available.
